Apple payout lifts Creative Technology's Q2 earnings

AFP:
Creative Technology, one of Singapore's top electronics firms, has said it returned to profitability in the second quarter to December from a first quarter loss, lifted by a 100-million dollar patent payment from US rival Apple.

Compared with the same quarter last year, the net profit of 92.12 million dollars rose more than ten times from 8.21 million dollars, the digital entertainment products maker said.

The one-time payout from Apple was part of a deal under which the US-based iPod maker settled a dispute over patented technology used in its MP3 players. The settlement money contributed 82 million dollars to Creative's net income.

Part of the deal allows Creative to join Apple's "Made for iPod" programme, meaning it will make and market its own line of iPod accessories.

Creative said the December quarter earnings were also lifted by sales of its ZEN range of MP3 music players during the crucial Christmas period in which 2.5 million units were sold.
It should be pretty clear to everyone that the bulk of whatever money Creative makes going forward will likely be made from iPod accessories and not their own MP3 players. I find that vaguely sad.
