Mac market share for Q4 2006: 2.4 percent

Well, the numbers are in. IDC says that all PC makers combined sold 65.6 million PCs in the fourth quarter of 2006. Gartner puts the figure at 67.4 million. And Apple reported that it sold 1.606 million Macs in the quarter. Let's do some math.

As always, I'll average the IDC and Gartner numbers. This puts global PC sales in Q4 2006 at 66.5 million. This means that Apple controls 2.4 percent of the worldwide PC market. I believe this is actually up a bit from last year, but you can see how even dramatic growth on the Mac side has little effect overall.

By the way, I got the IDC and Gartner numbers from a Wall Street Journal article on PC sales.
